Kia's JD Power Initial Quality Study In Evansville IN

Kia has once again delivered a runaway victory in the prestigious J.D. Power U.S. Initial Quality Study ( IQS ), taking the top spot for the entire automotive industry for a second consecutive year. Following up a year in which Kia became the first non-luxury brand in more than a quarter-century to top J.D. Power’s annual study, the brand captured first place in the 2017 IQS by a margin of five points over the second-place runner-up.

So how exactly does J.D. Power determine the winner of its IQS? Vehicles from all major auto brands are judged over eight categories that make up initial quality: exterior, driving experience, features/ controls/ displays, audio/communication/entertainment/navigation, seats, heating/ventilation/air conditioning, interior, and engine/transmission. The idea of initial quality is determined by measuring the frequency of these problems over the first 90 days of vehicle ownership, with every vehicle and brand earning a score based on the number of problems reported per 100 vehicles (PP100).

Not only was Kia well ahead of its competition at a score of 72 PP100, but it was considerably above the industry average of 97 PP100. What’s more, five of its vehicles topped their respective segments:

2017 Kia Soul: “Highest Ranked Compact Multi-Purpose Vehicle in Initial Quality, 3 Years in a Row”1

The Soul topped the 2017 Compact MPV segment for a third year in a row with a score of 68 PP100. The Kia Soul not only scored well above the segment average of 98 PP100, but it improved upon its score from 2016 with four fewer average problems per 100 vehicles.

2017 Kia Sorento: “Highest Ranked Midsize SUV in Initial Quality, 2 out of 3 Years in a Row” 2

The Sorento was the king of the Midsize SUV segment in the 2017 IQS with a score of 65 PP100. The Sorento outperformed the segment average of 95 PP100 by a wide margin and had the fewest problems with relation to squeaks, rattles, and abnormal noises, as well as difficulty of use, breakdowns or failure to function, and wear.

2017 Kia Forte: “Highest Ranked Compact Car in Initial Quality” 3

2017 marked the first win for the Forte in the hotly-contested Compact Car segment, and a year-over-year improvement of 11 PP100 made it far less close than it had been in years past. The 2017 Kia Forte scored 75 PP100, well below the segment average of 97 PP100 and seeing the biggest leaps in the exterior and features/controls/displays categories.

2017 Kia Cadenza: “Highest Ranked Large Car in Initial Quality” 4

In the 2017 Large Car IQS rankings, it wasn’t even close: the 2017 Kia Cadenza blitzed the competition with a score of 51 PP100, 26 points better than the second-best large car on the market and a full 40 PP100 below the segment average. The Cadenza’s design issues were 14 PP100 better than the second-place finisher, which was a considerable factor in its blow-out victory.

2017 Kia Niro: “Highest Ranked Small SUV in Initial Quality” 5

In its first year on the market, the 2017 Kia Niro edged out a victory in the 2017 Small SUV IQS rankings, with the hybrid well below the segment average of 108 PP100. The only reason that the competition was fierce at the finish was because the Niro’s next-closest competitor was the Kia Sportage, which finished just below the Niro’s 76 PP100 with an impressive 78 PP100.
