Originally known as “Yellow Banks,” the city’s name was changed to Owensboro in 1817 to honor the military hero Col. Abraham Owen.
Owensboro has a long legacy of manufacturing and repairing transportation vehicles. Before the invention of the automobile, Owensboro was the center of several prestigious companies that designed and repaired horse-drawn carriages and wagons.
