Summer Maintenance Guide in Evansville, IN

Even here in Evansville, it can get pretty hot in the summer. That’s why it’s important to protect your vehicle from the weather and stay up to date on its service schedule. Check out our helpful summer maintenance guide to keep your vehicle running smoothly!

Test the HVAC system

One of the first things you should do before it gets too hot is test the HVAC system on your car. Do this by running the air conditioning for at least 5 minutes. If you still feel warm or hot air coming out of the vents, there’s an issue that needs to be addressed. While you’re at our Service Center, we’ll get that fixed and check the cabin air filter to be sure that you’re getting the coolest, cleanest air this summer.

Check on the battery

After a grueling winter, your vehicle’s battery might need a quick check-up. Look under the hood for any signs of corrosion on the terminals and clean that. With the car completely off, put a teaspoon of baking soda on the terminals and other affected areas. Pour a small amount of water on after and scrub until the corrosion is gone. If you’d rather have our team do this and check the battery’s health, that’s fine too! The heat of summer can do a number on your car’s battery just as much as winter cold, so it’s vital that it’s working properly.

Inspect the tires

When the temperatures change, so does the pressure inside of your car’s tires. In order to grip the road properly and provide you with a safe and smooth ride, tires need to be inflated properly. Check the owner’s manual or the driver’s door jamb for the PSI recommended for your tires. When you’re filling up, check for any signs of cracks, tears, bulging, or excessive wear. If you notice anything concerning, contact our Service Department.

Replace the fluids

Another under-the-hood job that needs to be taken care of every season is replacing and filling up your car’s fluids. In addition to an oil change (and filter change), you should also check the following fluids and top them off as needed:

  • Transmission fluid
  • Brake fluid
  • Coolant
  • Power steering fluid
  • Windshield wiper fluid

If you’re not sure how to check one or any of these fluids, our certified team of technicians can easily do this for you when you visit.

Check on the windshield wipers

Speaking of windshield wiper fluid, now is a great time to check on those windshield wipers. They did a lot during winter to provide visibility and keep you safe, so they might need to be replaced. If the rubber parts are in any way torn or warped, you should have them replaced. When they are damaged, they don’t fully meet the surface of the windshield and can leave streaks that prevent you from seeing clearly. Also check the metal components of the wipers for signs of excessive rust, as this can lead to the wipers breaking entirely.

Stock up your emergency kit

A winter emergency kit is somewhat different than a summer emergency kit. While you may need things like a shovel, cat litter, and blankets in the chillier months, those items aren’t necessarily needed when temperatures rise. Instead, swap out some things for other necessities like water bottles, insect repellent, and sunscreen. Items that should be in your kit year-round include:

  • Jumper cables or a battery pack
  • Road flares
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • Non-perishable food
  • Phone charger

Keeping your vehicle in the best possible shape is simple when you follow a maintenance schedule. If you’re not sure what your car needs, you can refer to the owner’s manual or contact our team at Lou Fusz Kia in Evansville, Indiana!
