What is a CARFAX Report? | Evansville Kia
If you are considering purchasing a used vehicle, make sure you thoroughly review a CARFAX report before signing on the dotted line. The CARFAX report details the vehicle’s complete history and alerts you to any red flags you should consider before making your purchase.
CARFAX reports are full of important data for you to consider. When you purchase or receive a CARFAX report, read through it to determine: how many past owners the vehicle has had; what the lien and repossession history is; if there are any open (or closed) recalls or buybacks from the manufacturer; how many accidents the vehicle has been involved in, per data from DMVs, police departments, and insurance companies); its repair and odometer history; if the vehicle has ever been salvaged or junked; its emission inspection status; and whether the vehicle has ever been used by a business or as a fleet vehicle.
CARFAX relies on a number of sources to gather this data. In total, CARFAX relies on more than 92,000 sources. Among these sources are the US and Canadian provincial motor vehicle agencies; state inspection stations; vehicle manufacturers; car dealerships; service and maintenance facilities; collision repair facilities; extended warranty companies; insurance companies; auto and salvage auctions; automotive recyclers; rental and fleet companies; import and export companies; and law enforcement agencies and fire departments.
The data-gathering team at CARFAX sorts through roughly 3.5 million records each day. In total, the company relies on 15 billion records to compile its library of reports.
If you are purchasing a certified pre-owned (CPO) vehicle, many dealerships will actually offer the vehicle’s CARFAX report for free, like we do here at Evansville Kia. If you are buying used from a dealership or a private seller and are not offered a free CARFAX report, buy one on your own to educate yourself ahead of the purchase.
Contact our Finance Department at Evansville Kia if you have more questions about CARFAX reports, or contact our Pre-Owned Department for help finding a pre-owned vehicle that fits your budget and preferences.
